'He was excellent': Gareth Southgate explains why Bukayo Saka started ahead of Marcus Rashford vs Senegal

Speaking to ITV after the game on Sunday, Gareth Southgate said: "Bukayo Saka was excellent in our first two matches.

"We think Marcus Rashford was also very good and it's great to have him to be able to come into the game as it opens up.

"We've got an embarrassment of riches in that area of the pitch. We've liked Bukayo's performances, Phil Foden and him deserve their opportunity."

England are through to the World Cup quarter-finals after beating Senegal 3–0 with Saka starting Round of 16 clash and scoring the third goal of the game.

There were calls for Southgate to start Rashford ahead of the Arsenal man following the Manchester United forward's brace against Wales earlier last week.
