Ramsdale gives honest verdict to Maguire scoring an own goal against him

Aaron Ramsdale has backed Harry Maguire after the defender scored an own goal in Tuesday’s 3-1 friendly win over Scotland.

“I can sympathise with him in a way,” he said. I’ve been at the other end of the Premier League - fighting to stay up, being relegated twice - when you’re in a period where crowds, pundits or fans are [putting you] under the microscope, every little thing is analysed and detailed.

“If he was playing week in, week out or this noise wasn’t around and he scores an own goal then it probably gets pushed under the carpet. He’s tried to do the right thing, clear it, and it’s gone in. It’s unfortunate.

"But at the minute, because of his situation, people are overhyping saying he shouldn’t be playing, he should be playing, he shouldn't be here.”

“Harry Maguire, as we’ve seen for the past few years for England, is one of the best defenders we’ve got. He’s so strong mentally, he’s got a great group of people around him and his family and he knows his qualities.

“He’s always a threat in the box for set pieces, he knows he can defend, he knows he’s a leader. I love playing with and tonight was just one of those unfortunate things [where] it goes in the back of the net - another day it goes out for a throw-in for a corner.”

Maguire came on at half-time for Marc Guehi after playing the full 90 minutes in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Ukraine in their Euro 2024 qualifying group clash.

He has now made more appearances for England than Man United this season, featuring only against Arsenal from the bench in the Premier League so far.
