'Nobody asked': Mikel Arteta fires back at criticism for poor Arsenal squad management

Arsenal have endured a tough week after back-to-back losses against Aston Villa and Bayern Munich.

When asked about his squad looking tired - and whether other players should get opportunities - Mikel Arteta told reporters: "It is a possibility, that question is always going to come when you lose a game.

"When we defeated Brighton and we had an unbelievable week, everyone was talking about us winning the league, nobody asked this question."

At a similar stage last season, the Gunners lost the race for the Premier League title. Given the threadbare squad, it could be deduced that a lack of personnel led to that.

This time though, Arsenal have decent backup in certain positions. Players like Fabio Vieira, Emile Smith Rowe, Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson are all awaiting chances.

Thomas Partey has also returned from injury but he's been on the bench. The Arsenal starting XI is pretty much unchanged since the beginning of the season, prompting calls for other players to get chances.

With exhaustion creeping into the squad, Arsenal are out of the Champions League and have also failed to maintain a strong lead in the Premier League table.
