- Michael Mancienne was welcomed warmly to Chelsea's first team by then-captain Terry, who struck up a conversation with him.
- During his time with the English national team, Terry got a shirt signed by the entire squad for Mancienne.
- Mancienne applauds Terry's sweet nature and adds that the shirt is still one of his most prized possessions.
Ex-Blues centre-back Michael Mancienne told The Athletic how John Terry made him feel at home during his Chelsea days: "I remember when I was signing my first pro deal and obviously a nobody. I walked into Harlington (Chelsea’s former training ground) not expecting anyone to know my name.
"John Terry just walked up to me and said, 'Hi Michael, how are you?' and went on to have a conversation with me. That blew me away. It showed me that he was a nice guy, a true captain."
The centre-back, who recently signed for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s Burton Albion side, also recalls a great gesture by the legendary defender during his first call-up to the English national team.
"He was the England captain when I got my call-up to the senior squad to face Germany," he continued. "On the plane home, there were a lot of big stars on board.
"He went around the whole plane and got everyone to sign my shirt for me, he didn’t have to do that, but he went out of his way to do so. It’s something I still treasure. I have it framed in my office. It’s one of my most prized possessions."
That's Terry for you - a wonderful leader of men and a superb teammate to have. There's a good reason why he led Chelsea to 5 Premier League titles as not only was he a world-class defender, he was a stand-up guy who took care of the people around him!
