2 four-at-the-back formations Tuchel can trial in pre-season

When Thomas Tuchel arrived at Chelsea, he changed the four-at-the-back shape deployed by Lampard to a 3-4-2-1 formation.

The Blues won the Champions League with a three-man defence but it does not mean the head coach should stick with it forever.

Tuchel used a four-at-the-back shape during his time at PSG, and there is a chance he could shake things up at Chelsea and try a new formation.

Option 1: 4-2-3-1

This is a fairly standard shape that Frank Lampard used at some point of his reign as a Chelsea manager.

The double pivot allows defensive solidity, full-backs provide width in the final third as wingers run into channels and create overloads at the edge of the opposition penalty area.

This system is a perfect fit for Werner and Pulisic as both have the necessary positional awareness to run in behind opposition defenders as eagle-eyed Havertz and Mount feed them with through balls.

All four players in this front four are excellent in tight spaces and can get past their marker through pace or dribbling,

Option 2: 4-2-4

Tuchel used this shape at PSG and reports state he trialled this formation at some point during the Peterborough friendly.

Here Havertz plays in a supporting striker role, dropping deep to collect the ball and move it forward if needed.

The downside of this formation is that it requires a classic centre-forward, and we're not sure Broja or Abraham are ready for a first-team role at Chelsea at this point of their careers.

However, this system could be worth trying out if we sign a goalscoring striker like Haaland, Lewandowski or Ings.

What do you think? Should Chelsea make a switch to a back-four or should they keep the three-at-the-back shape?
