What happened to Chelsea's transfer target that got away during mad 2020 summer spree

Last summer, Chelsea were on a mad spending spree as they got in players like Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz and more.

As per The Athletic, a reliable source of news, Chelsea were also very interested in signing Lewis Dunk of Brighton.

The experienced centre-back was seen as a cheaper alternative to Declan Rice, who Frank Lampard really wanted to bring to Stamford Bridge.

However, Dunk decided to stay with Brighton eventually. The Blues were reportedly ready to move in for him - however, he ended up signing a new 5-year deal with the Seagulls and is now their highest earner.

It all ended well for Chelsea, however, as they moved to a different target and ended up signing Thiago Silva.

Dunk is still Brighton's captain and has played all 4 Premier League games for them so far.

From a long-term view, you can say that this was good for Chelsea as Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen really improved their game under Tuchel and that might not have been possible with Dunk starting every game.

Trevor Chalobah is still developing and could become a great centre-back while given Silva's age, Chelsea are also looking at a younger defender in Jules Kounde.
