Rating Chelsea performance against Malmo based on 4 key factors

Tactics

Thomas Tuchel decided against experimenting against Malmo and picked starters to play against the Swedish champions.

While the decision worked in a way that the Blues took an early comfortable lead, it backfired because Lukaku and Werner picked up injuries.

The coach allowed the players a great degree of freedom. It resulted in Chelsea playing some really fluid football, with Thiago Silva and Christensen—two defenders—combining for an opener. Azpilicueta was literally everywhere on the pitch, too.

Playing Havertz at centre-forward could have raised some eyebrows but the German did quite well, linking up with the midfield and getting into dangerous positions.

Tactics score: 6/10

Teamwork

The Blues looked like a team from another planet in comparison to Malmo. Chelsea were always two steps ahead of their Swedish opponents today, and the scoreline reflects it.

Malmo couldn't do anything with Chelsea's attacks as the Blues caused trouble to the opposition left, right and centre.

Chelsea were extremely organised defensively. They did incredibly well to saturate the midfield, barely allowing Malmo to move past the halfway line.

As a result, Edouard Mendy had arguably the easiest shift in his career: he made zero saves yet kept a clean sheet.

Teamwork score: 10/10

Finishing

It could have been 10-0 with the number of chances Chelsea created. The Blues were really dominant throughout the game and the likes of Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell could have gotten on the scoresseet.

Yet it's difficult to complain about chance conversion when the team wins 4-0.

Finishing score: 7/10

Fighting spirit

Chelsea players really turned up today and gave their 100 per cent. They played with the right attitude, taking their opposition seriously.

There was no need to show much fight today as Malmo are a much weaker side. Chelsea deserve praise for not thinking that the game was won before the starting whistle.

Fighting spirit score: 10/10

Overall rating: 8/10
