Who is Tuchel's assistant Arno Michels who masterminded key tactical switch vs Malmo - explained

Chelsea's only goal against Malmo was a result of the tactical change the Blues made at half-time.

Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech, the two players who ended up combining for the goal, switched flanks.

So, when Hudson-Odoi received the ball on the right wing, he could play a pass to Ziyech without taking extra touches to move infield and change foot.

Thomas Tuchel was asked about that change, and he was quick to praise his assistant head coach Arno Michels, a relatively unknown name even for most of the Chelsea fans. So, who is he?

During his playing career, defensive midfielder Arno Michels did not rise above the German third tier. He was always a student of the game, however, and started his coaching career at the age of 30 while he was still playing.

As he was doing his coaching badges, Michels met Tuchel who gave him a big break by inviting him to Mainz as assistant manager in 2009.

For 12 years, Michels has been Tuchel's right-hand man, as the journey took them from Mainz to Chelsea through Borussia Dortmund and PSG.

"He is a diligent, hardworking and loyal trainer whose character traits suit me perfectly," Tuchel once said of his assistant who shares the manager's philosophy for attacking play.

As the Malmo game showed, Michels has a big say in the dressing room and is not afraid to challenge Tuchel's way of thinking - which is a part of why they've been such a great partnership for over 10 years.
