And now the goalkeeper himself has spoken about it via his Instagram. Mendy wrote: "Sad to see that in 2021, in France as in England, for some blacks have neither first names nor distinct faces. 

"These photo 'mistakes' sound like anecdotal, they are highly symbolic on the contrary.

"However, it is not that difficult to distinguish two faces, especially when the jersey is of a valuable help!"

, who also faced the same issue, thanked Mendy for speaking out. He wrote: "Thank you Edouard Mendy! We are in 2021! STOP. It will take time but you will end up respecting us! Whether you like it or not."

This news wouldn't normally get on our Chelsea news feed but it has been discussed by Blues fans, for all the wrong reasons.

Upday, a news service that calls itself "Europe's biggest news app" in their Twitter bio, has posted a piece about Benjamin Mendy's latest court appearance.

This has enraged many Chelsea fans as race has been brought into the conversation.

: "For those confused. THAT IS NOT BENJAMIN MENDY the accused, in the picture. That is Edouard MENDY. 

"Chelsea’s first team Goalkeeper, who some was arguing should be in contention for Ballon D’or. But black is black I suppose"

: "That is NOT Benjamin Mendy that they have used in that image. 

"It is Edouard Mendy. Who plays for Chelsea and not Man City. 

"That's defamation, no? How does this even happen?"

: "Maybe I’m wrong but I think it was just written by someone who has no clue about football and had just seen the name Mendy. 

"It even says in the article Man City and he’s wearing a Chelsea kit. It isn’t an excuse to tie an innocent man to a rape case tho."

: "To those wondering a Manchester City player with the last name Mendy was charged with rape charges and they put the picture of a different Mendy that plays for Chelsea. Racist"

"What a shocking, unacceptable and unprofessional error. They can't tell the difference between a midfielder Mendy at Man City and a GK Mendy at Chelsea?"

Upday have apologised for using Edouardo Mendy's picture in the news story about Benjamin Mendy.

"Upday sincerely apologises for using the incorrect image in a story regarding Benjamin Mendy earlier today," they wrote on Twitter.

"We have rectified the issue and are contacting our image provider over the mislabelled image. Once again, we apologise for any offence caused."

This is intentional, there's no way any media outfit won't know or mistaking a name for another, it's not possible. I believe there should be a proper Xtra or cross-check  before a new or information is posted, an headline for that matter. Therefore, it's pure intentional to destroy Mendy's career bcos he's the best goalkeeper in the whole world and this was done bcos some people later regretted  they didn't nominate him for Balloon D'or 20 men nominee.

This is a disgraceful example of mistaken identity  - the same surname and whoever used the photo didn't check the facts? Why in this day & age of technology there are no excuses! Huge legal battle and payout for compensation. This is why the footballers should point to the badge that say's RESPECT.
