Rating Chelsea's performance against Juventus based on 4 key factors

The Blues handed Juventus their biggest Champions League defeat ever with a 4-0 thrashing of the Italian side.

Let's analyse how the game went for the Blues as we rate the performance of Thomas Tuchel's side:

Finishing

Chelsea had 21 attempts on goal, with 13 of them coming from open play situations and the remaining eight coming from set-pieces.

Out of these 21 attempts, eight were on target (that were as many shots Juventus had in the entire match!). Chelsea's xG was also very impressive as the Blues notched up 3.11 expected goals against one of the best defences in the world.

With four goals scored against a strong defence, it would be harsh to give Chelsea anything less than a nine here - one mark is lost for the conversion rate of 19 per cent.

Rating: 9/10

Tactics

These were the average player positions for Chelsea in the game, as per WhoScored:

As we can see, Thiago Silva and Trevoh Chalobah were the only ones who stayed in the Blues' own half for the majority of the game! Rudiger dropped next to Jorginho with Kante on the side.

As per WhoScored, here is how Chelsea attacked:

Tuchel's 3-4-3 formation took advantage of Juventus' usual 4-4-2 as the opponents could not handle the pace of Reece James on the side.

Chelsea also took major advantage of the set-piece situations with the opening goal coming from there. It's safe to say that there was no fault in Tuchel's tactics here.

Rating: 10/10

Defence

Only 20% of the action across the entire game took place in Chelsea's final third (as per WhoScored). This means that Juventus were able to spend just over 15 minutes in our area. In contrast, Chelsea spent more than 35 minutes in Juve's final third!

They had 8 shots to show for it, but only three of them were on target. Rudiger, Chalobah and Silva all had nights to remember while Juventus could not take much advantage of the central areas (only 22 per cent of their attacks came from there).

Keeping a clean sheet against Juventus is obviously a big deal and the Blues' backline stood strong against a decent attack.

Rating: 10/10

Substitutions

Tuchel made use of all the five available substitutions. A couple of them were forced, with Ben Chilwell and N'Golo Kante having to be subbed off due to injuries.

The game was pretty much over by the 71st minute when Chilwell came off as the Blues were leading 3-0, so there's not much we can add here as the starting XI had the game in the bag!

However, we must mention Ruben Loftus-Cheek's impressive 60 minutes on the field after he replaced Kante. Timo Werner also added a goal to the game after being introduced as a late sub.
