Chelsea lose fifth domestic cup final in a row - three of them ended in penalty shootout

Chelsea were defeated yet again in the FA Cup final against Liverpool.

The game was decided by a penalty shootout which Chelsea lost 6-5.

This is the fifth consecutive domestic cup final the Blues have lost.

The run started under Maurizio Sarri when Chelsea lost to Man City in the Carabao Cup final, also on penalties.

Then followed two defeats in the decisive games for the FA Cup. In 2020, Frank Lampard's side lost to Arsenal 2-1. A year later, already under Thomas Tuchel, they were defeated by Leicester 1-0.

This year is probably the most agonising one. Chelsea faced Liverpool in both finals and held them to a 0-0 draw on both occasions without being an inferior side. Unfortunately, the Blues lost both penalty shootouts to their rivals.

Of course, Chelsea won the Europa League and the Champions League in this period, beating English sides on both occasions. Still, Wembley feels like a cursed stadium for the Blues when it comes to finals.
