Ranking Chelsea midfielders from average to world-class

We have already ranked Chelsea defenders from average to world-class - now, we take a look at the team's midfield ahead of the new season.

Average

Ross Barkley: Barkley is only still at Chelsea because the Blues did not receive a suitable offer for him last summer. He will likely leave this transfer window and his career here has been subpar, to say the least.

Billy Gilmour: Gilmour showed a lot of promise when he debuted under Frank Lampard. He is still a very talented player but he hasn't really shown any improvement the past two seasons and is not in Tuchel's future plans.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek: The 26-year-old did have a few good games last season but overall, he's certainly not someone who should be starting for Chelsea. His game time will be limited next season after the return of Conor Gallagher.

Good

Conor Gallagher: Gallagher was Crystal Palace's best player last season. The only thing stopping him from being in the 'great' tier is his lack of experience at the top level - we surely expect to see him starting a lot of games for Chelsea next season.

Callum Hudson-Odoi: It's hard to even classify Hudson-Odoi as a midfielder anymore, as he has played at left/right wing and left wing-back majority of last season.

However, his favourite position is still as a right-sided attacking midfielder. Hudson-Odoi had some impressive performances last season but it remains to be seen if he gets the same chances now that the squad is bigger and has more quality.

Great

Jorginho: The former UEFA Men's Player of the Year had a slight dip in form last season as he was not as excellent as he was in our Champions League-winning campaign.

Regardless, Jorginho is certainly a great midfielder who can change games with his vision and he does show up on the defensive end quite often.

Mason Mount: Chelsea's back-to-back player of the year is just one more season away from being truly world-class. Almost every team in the world could use a player like Mount - versatile, hard-working, good eye for a pass and a goal.

We expect Mount to certainly be in the world-class category when we re-write this list next summer!

World-class

N'Golo Kante: Kante's form certainly dipped last season as injuries and age seem to be catching up with him.

However, it would be foolish to label him as anything but world-class - he still has the lungs of two men and his new role as a box-to-box midfielder has helped Chelsea win quite a few important games.

Mateo Kovacic: Kovacic was arguably Chelsea's best midfielder last season and he is a certain starter next season too. His creativity, defensive abilities and leadership in the middle of the park are very important to how Chelsea play.
