Chelsea wanted to keep Gilmour but Tuchel advised him to join Brighton to play under Potter (reliability: 5 stars)

The Athletic report that Chelsea's hierarchy wanted to retain Billy Gilmour in the summer transfer window. At a meeting on September 1, they told the 21-year-old they wanted to keep him.

However, The Scotland international joined Brighton, with Chelsea reluctantly accepting a £9m bid. The key reason behind the move is Thomas Tuchel.

The then-Blues manager 'encouraged' Billy to sign for the Seagulls. The German thought the midfielder would develop under Graham Potter's careful guidance.

Tuchel told Gilmour that he won't get much game time at Chelsea and Billy decided to part ways with the club.

Just a week later, Potter replaced Tuchel in charge of the Blues in what looks like a shocking twist of fate for Gilmour.
