'I'm half the player': Gallagher laughs off Kante comparisons

Back in March, it was reported that then-Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel viewed Conor Gallagher as a player who shared a lot of qualities with N'Golo Kante.

When asked about it now, Gallagher has modestly brushed off the comparison.

"When he said it, it did make me laugh and surprise me a little bit," he said as per the Evening Standard.

"It's obviously a massive compliment, even if I'm half the player Kante is because I feel like he's the best midfielder in the world, probably still now when he's fit.

"We are obviously different players. He probably gets around a bit more than me, he's a bit sharper than me. So yeah, we're different players."

Gallagher and Kante are not too similar, indeed: for example, it's hard to imagine N'Golo in the front three where the Englishman played in the last game for the Blues.

Still, the question of Kante's replacement is getting more important as his contract with Chelsea expires next summer. As it stands, it's not too likely to be extended due to his age and injury problems.

Mount, Sterling and Gallagher's England squad numbers for World Cup – revealed

Mason Mount, Raheem Sterling and Conor Gallagher are the three Chelsea players picked by Gareth Southgate to represent England at the World Cup.

Mount has taken his usual number 19 for the tournament, the same that he wears for Chelsea.

Sterling has opted for the glamorous number 10, which he has donned for England for a few years now.

Conor Gallagher will also be taking a different number from the one he wears at Chelsea. His Chelsea number 23 has been picked by Ramsdale so Gallagher has opted for 26.
