£20.5m from Mudryk fee to go to Ukrainian soldiers, Chelsea commit to friendly in Ukraine

Shakhtar Donetsk have announced they will donate £20.5m to Ukrainian soldiers, almost a quarter of the £88.5m fee they will get from the Mykhailo Mudryk transfer to Chelsea.

They have also said that Chelsea agreed to play against Shakhtar at Donbass Arena, the Ukrainian side's former home that they were forced to abandon in 2014, when Russia occupied Donetsk.

The friendly is obviously impossible now but it would be played when Ukraine liberates Donetsk.

"I have never made it a secret that my dream is to win European trophies," Rinat Akhmetov, the owner of Shakhtar, said in a statement.

"This means that players like Mudryk should be invited to our club, to our Ukrainian championship, and we should win European trophies with such players, rather than root for them, even when they play in the world's top clubs.

"Unfortunately, it is impossible now, as Ukraine is fighting the horrendous and unjust war waged against us by the Russian Federation. But I am confident that we will win. And we will play a friendly against Chelsea at Donbass Arena in a Ukrainian Donetsk.

"We have to do everything we can to bring this day closer."

Russia is still destroying Ukrainian cities and killing civilians including kids with all the weapons imaginable. We strongly condemn Putin’s genocide and acts of terror against Ukraine.
