‘I try to create an environment where everyone feels safe': Azpilicueta explains how he's helping tackle homophobia in football

Speaking about how he helps tackle homophobia at Chelsea, Cesar Azpilicueta told Sky Sports: “I have friends [who] are gay and I would try to help in a way that feels comfortable.

“The most important thing for me is to try to create an environment where everybody is safe, not only by doing the campaigns that we are doing, which is amazing, but to raise awareness for the world.

“We know how powerful football is, but also on the daily basis trying to create the environment wherever.”

Chelsea’s Women team stars Pernille Harder and Magda Eriksson are a couple, but there are no noted homosexuals in the Men’s team yet.

The Blues have been the victims of quite a lot of homophobia in the past, with a lot of their former players being labeled as  ‘rent boys’ in the past – with the word being really homophobic in nature.

The Chelsea captain appears to be bent on changing this perception by creating an environment at the club which makes everyone feel safe and comfortable.
