Chelsea ask Premier League for spending rule exemption, cite sanctions

Chelsea are set to write to the Premier League to ask to be exempt from the competition's regulations on spending, the Daily Mail reports.

The Premier League clubs are allowed to make a £105m loss over a three-year period. Chelsea are at risk of breaching this rule, having lost £153m in 2021 alone.

The Blues' argument is that they were unable to get income in three months following the club's former owner Roman Abramovich came under UK sanctions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and before the Todd Boehly-led takeover.

The Mail adds that it would be more difficult for the Blues to comply to UEFA's Financial Fair Play than to make an agreement with the Premier League.

Chelsea spent over £600m on new players in this season's two transfer windows.
