Chelsea Women through to Champions League semi-finals after beating holders Lyon in shootout

Chelsea Women have progressed to the Champions League semifinal in the most dramatic fashion, beating holders Lyon in a penalty shootout.

The Blues won the first leg in France 1-0 and held on to their narrow lead until the 77th minute. Then, Vanessa Gilles' goal took the game into extra time.

In the 110th minute, Sara Dabritz doubled Lyon's lead at Stamford Bridge and gave her team an advantage in the double-legged tie.

Emma Hayes' team chased an equaliser until the very last minutes when Lauren James was fouled in Lyon's box. Maren Mjelde converted the penalty in the 128th minute.

In the penalty shootout, Chelsea prevailed thanks to two saves from Ann-Katrin Berger.

In the semifinal, they will face Barcelona, the side that battered them 4-0 in the final of this competition two years ago.
