- El Pais recently reported Messi has the option to terminate his contract at Barca on June 30.
- The information has been confirmed by the club's president.
- Still, Bartomeu is sure Leo will continue.
Recently, Spanish outlet El Pais broke the news about an option in Leo Messi's contract at Barcelona which allows him to terminate the deal every summer on June 30 and leave for another club. The only conditions, as per the report, are that the Argentine can only leave for a non-European club and that he has to be over 32 (which he is).
In his exclusive interview to BarcaTV, Barca's president Josep Maria Bartomeu confirmed the information:
"Messi can leave whenever he wants. He has gained freedom over his future. But I have no doubt that he will continue. Xavi, Iniesta and Puyol had this option as well. Messi is a huge Barca fan," said the official.
However, previous reports from ESPN claim Barca have plans to offer Messi a new contract that would run until 2023. The negotiations are set to start in late 2019 or early 2020. Leo's current deal expires in 2021.
This term, the 32-year-old has yet to make an appearance. While the captain remains injured, the Blaugrana have only won one of their three La Liga games. With four points, the Catalans are currently 8th in the table, five points behind leaders Atletico Madrid
