- Koeman uses Frenkie in a more defensive role at the national team.
- De Jong is playing in a more advanced position at Barca.
- The Dutch coach says the good thing is that the midfielder is playing a lot.
Following the UEFA Nations League group stage draw, Dutch national team coach Ronald Koeman commented on Frenkie de Jong's season in Catalonia.
"The positive thing is that he plays a lot of games, but he's playing in a different position to what he's used to. He plays differently with me in the national team.
"Neither at Ajax nor in the national team does he play in that position, but it's the decision of the coach.
"He's a very young player and you learn things from playing games."
At Ajax, the 22-year-old used to play as a pivot, either in a 4-2-3-1 formation or 4-3-3. However, he is playing closer to attack at Barca, as the position is occupied by Sergio Busquets.
So far this season, Frenkie has played 2,829 minutes across 36 matches and he is one of the most-used players in the squad. He has registered two goals and four assists.
