Ligue 1 leading scorer Wissam Ben Yedder could have reportedly ended up at Barcelona this January

According to L'Equipe, Barcelona contacted Monaco's striker Wissam Ben Yedder over a potential January move. The 29-year-old could have ended up at the Camp Nou stadium as Luis Suarez's replacement.

Sadly for Barca, the Catalans were forced to discard this option due to the economic reasons. Monaco asked for €40m for their leading goalscorer which was deemed too much for Barca.

Ben Yedder made his name during the three-year spell at Sevilla. In total, he netted 70 goals in 138 matches for the Rojiblancos between 2016 and 2019.

The Frenchman joined Monaco for €40million last summer. The 29-year-old has scored 19 goals in 31 matches in all competitions. He is on top of the Ligue 1 goalscoring charts with Kylian Mbappe.

As for Barcelona's infamous quest for a striker, the Catalans were linked with several big names in January, even including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. However, they were reportedly lacking funds to make a big-money move.

Eventually, Barcelona triggered Leganes' striker Martin Braithwaite's €18m exit clause in February. The Catalans were allowed to make an emergency signing after Ousmane Dembele was sidelined for six months with a hamstring tear.
