"We cannot wait any longer to activate an emergency plan to help fix the club's delicate financial situation," Joan Laporta said on Tuesday, as quoted by Sport.
"We're also losing a golden opportunity, which is the January transfer window. We need to make immediate decisions.
"Right now, Barca don't even have the budget approved for this season. With this lack of governance, we cannot operate. Enough of these questions.
"Not holding the election would have irreversible consequences for the club."
The next Barcelona presidential election is set to take place on January 24. Earlier this week, Cadena SER suggested that the election is 'likely to be postponed' to a later date due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Laporta is now a clear favourite to beat Victor Font, Toni Freixa and Emili Rousaud to the role after collecting 10,257 signatures to register for the election on Monday.
