VAR overturns Madrid's penalty and gives one to Sevilla, Rakitic converts to keep Barca in the race

Karim Benzema won a penalty in Real Madrid's home clash against Sevilla after a dazzling counter-attack. However, after the VAR check, the referee awarded the guests a penalty for a handball on Eder Militao.

Then it was none other than Ivan Rakitic who stepped up and converted the penalty kick, making the score 2-1 in Sevilla's favour. Earlier in the game, the former Barcelona midfielder assisted his team's first goal. Unfortunately, Madrid managed to equal the score in the added time.

According to 2010MisterChip at Twitter, it was the first time in La Liga that VAR gave a penalty the other way after overturning a penalty.

After the draw between Real Madrid and Sevilla, Barca have dropped to the third spot in La Liga while being tied on points with Los Blancos. In order for the Catalans to be crowned champions, they need both Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid to drop points in the remaining three matches.

The match between Real Madrid and Sevilla ended in a 2-2 draw with Los Blancos managing to save a point thanks to a late own goal from Diego Carlos after a shot from Toni Kroos. This leaves the Whites in the second spot in LaLiga, sitting above Barcelona despite being tied on points.

Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, sit in the first spot with 77 points, two points clear of Barca and Real Madrid.

Pique gives his take on La Liga race after Atletico draw

"It wasn't to be, we are not in control of our own destiny now. But given how La Liga has been this season, not a given that any team wins all their games," Gerard Pique has told Movistar, as quoted by The Athletic.

"We're still alive. We played a good game and we had more chances. We don't depend on ourselves. We generated enough chances to score.

"We are Barca and we have to fight for La Liga until the end, we have always done it that way. If we don't depend on ourselves now, it's because at times we haven't been well," Pique concluded.

Barcelona are now 2 points behind Atletico Madrid in the La Liga table. Real Madrid are just one point behind Barca with one game in hand.
