Current season becomes Ter Stegen's worst in his Barca career

Marc-Andre ter Stegen's 2020/21 season is over as he will miss the final game against Eibar due to a knee injury. With that in mind, Diario Sport report that the current season has been Marc's worst season in terms of stats since joining Barcelona in 2014.

In total, Ter Stegen played 42 matches for Barca this term and conceded 50 goals, as per the Catalan outlet. This results in 1.19 goals conceded per game, his worst result since his Camp Nou arrival. Last season, the German conceded the same number of goals while playing four more games, meaning that his per game result was better.

However, this is still far from Ter Stegen's absolute worst season of his career. In 2012/13, while still at Borussia Monchengladbach, Marc conceded 63 goals in 45 matches or 1.4 goals per game.

Still, Diario Sport note that the goalkeeper isn't alone to blame for the Catalans' poor defensive display this season, saying that the injuries for Sergi Roberto and Gerard Pique, the inexperience of Ronald Araujo and Oscar Mingueza, Clement Lenglet's inconsistency, Sergino Dest's struggle to adapt, Samuel Umtiti's 'invisibility' and Jordi Alba's defensive unconcernedness also chipped in.

In terms of overall defensive performance, Barca have conceded a total of 58 goals this term, one more than the previous season. It is the worst result since 2016/17 when the team, lead by Luis Enrique at that time, conceded the same number of goals.

Ter Stegen will miss Eibar clash and Euros with Germany through knee issue, sends message on social media

Marc-Andre ter Stegen will undergo a therapeutic procedure on his right knee on Thursday in Malmo, Barcelona have confirmed.

Thus, the goalkeeper will miss Sunday's clash at Eibar, the Blaugrana's final game of the season.

The 29-year-old has also confirmed that he won't play for Germany at his summer's European Championship.

"I’m disappointed about yesterday’s defeat and that now we can no longer win La Liga. After a complicated start to the season, we showed good character going 19 matches unbeaten - but we weren’t able to keep this form," Ter Stegen wrote on Instagram on Monday.

"I have decided together with the medical team of the club that I will do a complementary intervention on my knee. I’m sad that I will miss the EURO 2020 this summer with Germany.

"For the first time in many years I will be a fan at home supporting my country, I hope we win it!

"After the summer break, when we are back on the pitch I hope to be able to play with fans once again, I miss it!

"Thank you for your support throughout a difficult season and stay healthy!"

Messi 8, Ter Stegen 3: rating Barca players in Celta loss

The Barcelona captain scored a magnificent header and was active throughout the game. Messi missed a few good chances, though, which ended up closing the team.

Besides Leo, Dembouz was the only active player upfront, creating various dangerous moments for his teammates. The Frenchman has shown that he can be a great creative asset, too bad that nobody could finish his passes.

Lenglet was decent throughout the game but picked up a stupid second yellow and got sent off. The second goal came from the area he would've been defending if not for the red.

It's difficult to say why Pique didn't close in on the Celta Vigo forward when the visitors scored their first goal. And obvious mistake from Gerard, something inexcusable for a player of his experience.

Pique might've blocked his view in the first goal, but the shot wasn't too powerful and the German should've reacted to it. In the second goal, Ter Stegen simply lost the goal, another inexcusable mistake.
