Foden: 'If I took someone fishing, it would be Messi. He's my idol'

"If I spent all day fishing and if I could take someone, I would go with Messi. I have never played with him, and since I was little I consider him my idol. I just want to sit down and talk to him, I think it would be the best day of my life," Phil Foden has said for FIFA21.

"Messi is the most complete player I've ever seen. He's one of the best if not the best in the world. His skills are fantastic," the Englishman added.

Foden has often been compared to Leo Messi for their quickness and playmaking skills. The 20-year-old has scored 15 goals and provided 10 assists for Manchester City this season.

By the way, Pep Guardiola once named Foden the most talented player he has ever managed, even snubbing Leo.

Ruud Gullit names one young player who's 'in the same category as Messi' – it's not Mbappe or Haaland

"[Manchester] City have given [Phil] Foden his chance and he has shown he is unbelievable, that he is in the same category as Lionel Messi," the Netherlands' legend Ruud Gullit has told the BBC.

"In the past, only the big, strong, quick players were the ones always selected by the English teams but now I think smaller, agile and more technical players are trusted more," he added.

However, the Dutchman later clarified his stance: "Foden is not exactly like Messi as a player. They are the same when it comes to their stature, height and quickness."

Earlier, Pep Guardiola named Phil Foden the most talented player he has ever managed, even snubbing Leo Messi.

It's worth a mention that Foden usually plays a left winger while Messi operates on the right side.

The 20-year-old has scored 15 goals and provided 10 assists for Manchester City across all competitions this season.

Guardiola names the most talented player he ever trained (spoiler: it's not Messi)

"He (Foden) is the most talented player I have ever seen. His problem is sometimes his manager doesn't put him in starting XI," the former Barca boss Pep Guardiola said.

"He deserves all the minutes but with his competitors, it isn't easy. He works incredibly. He knows I'm here to help him," added Josep.

The 19-year-old made 26 appearances for the English club last season, scoring 7 goals, although he is not a striker. The player himself enjoys watching Andres Iniesta play and was earlier compared with the 37-year-old.

"But Iniesta, come on, he is on a different planet, so for them (Man City staff) to call me that is massive, it means a lot," told Phil after one of his benefits.

Some of the earlier reports linked the Englishman with his possible switch for Blaugrana, however, the player seems to be determined to continue under Guardiola.
