Lionel Messi has been included in WhoScored.com's statistically best team of the season in Europe's top five leagues with an overall rating of 8.52.
Robert Lewandowski, who scored 41 goals in 29 Bundesliga appearances this season to break Gerd Muller’s 49-year-old record for the most strikes in a single season, has the second-best rating - 8.07.
Lewandowski's 41 goals this term also helped him win the European Golden Boot. One Tottenham fan was quick to point out Messi's superiority over the Pole.
"How terrifying is it that Messi, in a statistical standpoint, has an average rating almost 0.5 higher than a guy who just broke a goalscoring record," Reddit user @tnerappa wrote.
