Wijnaldum out: 3 ways Barca could line up next season based on most plausible transfer rumours

Barcelona have apparently missed out on the signing of Georginio Wijnaldum as the Dutchman is set to join Paris Saint-Germain, as per reliable Fabrizio Romano.

Still, Barca's transfer activity this summer is still far from over with Sergio Aguero, Eric Garcia and Emerson Royal already on board.

Let's take a look at what Ronald Koeman's starting XI could like in the 2021/22 season based on arguably the most realistic rumours.

Memphis Depay

Romano also says that Barca have recently offered Depay an improved deal to complete his free transfer from Lyon as soon as possible in order to avoid another Wijnaldum-esque turnaround.

Memphis is capable of covering the No.9 position but Koeman is almost 100 per cent likely to use his fellow Dutchman on the left.

Fabian Ruiz

The Catalans have long been linked with the Napoli midfielder and have reignited their interest in Ruiz after Wijnaldum's snub, according to Cat Radio, a tier 1 source.

If the Spaniard moves to Camp Nou, he's likely to replace Sergio Busquets in the starting XI with Frenkie De Jong switching to the latter's position.

Aymeric Laporte

Barca and Manchester City are in talks over the centre-back's potential move to Catalonia, according to Diario Sport.

Well, we wouldn't say that Sport are among the most trustworthy sources but here are at least four strong reasons why Laporte could be on his way to Barca in the coming months.

Barcelona improve Depay offer to avoid Wijnaldum scenario (reliability: 5 stars)

"Barcelona are now offering Memphis Depay a contract until June 2024. Three years improved agreement on the table in order to complete the deal 'as soon as possible', to avoid another turnaround after Gini Wijnaldum changed his mind to join PSG," Fabrizio Romano tweets.

As noted by Gol, Memphis Depay could officially sign for Barca in the next 48 hours.

As a reminder, Barcelona were incredibly close to signing Georginio Wijnaldum for free but the latter decided to join PSG after they made an 'astronomic offer'.

As for Depay, the 27-year-old forward scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists for Lyon last season.

Memphis Depay produces another Man of the Match performance ahead of anticipated Barca move

Barcelona target Memphis Depay once again proved himself a focal point of the Netherlands national team as he led Oranje to a 3-0 win over Georgia in a friendly encounter on Sunday.

The 27-year-old opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 10th minute before assisting Wout Weghorst's strike after the break.

What's more, Ryan Gravenberch, who made it 3-0 to the Dutch side in the 76th minute, did it from a rebound after Depay's attempt so you can count it as the latter's assist too, if you like.

Memphis made a full 90-minute appearance on Sunday while his potential Barca teammate Frenkie de Jong started the game but was subbed off for Gravenberch 21 minutes into the second half.

As per reports, the negotiations between the Catalans and Depay's camp are progressing well. The forward is out of contract at Lyon on June 30 and is free to join Barca on a free transfer from July 1.
