Yaya Toure joins Russian club from Chechnya region in yet unclear role

Yaya Toure has officially joined Akhmat's coaching staff.

The Ivorian signed a contract until the end of the 2021/22 season. It is explained that Yaya's warm relationship with Mohamed Salah has been key to this decision – the Egyptian forward trained at Akhmat's training base during the 2018 World Cup and 'recommended' Toure to join the club.

It's yet unknown what his exact role at the club would be, it is only said that the head coach of the club from the Chechnya region will decide on Yaya's responsibilities.

Akhmat, which comes from the notorious Chechnya region headed by Ramzan Kadyrov, finished 11th in the Russian Premier League last season.

Earlier, the 38-year-old was an assistant coach at the Ukrainian side Olimpik Donetsk.

Yaya Toure made 118 appearances for Barca between 2007 and 2010, scoring 6 goals.

Yaya Toure: I wrote a letter to Guardiola. It's been a year and he didn't reply

In 2018, Yaya Toure had accused his former Man City boss Pep Guardiola of having problems with African players and promised to send him a cake when he lines up a starting Xi with five African stars.

This caused a lot of controversy and when discussing this with The Athletic, Toure said: "I was aware some (City) staff were not happy (with the comments). I was the first to say, ‘OK, I apologise’.

"When something is wrong, I will say, 'That is wrong, I don't like it'. Unfortunately, a lot of things have been done wrong and a lot of things have been going on.

"We've been working hard on it, trying to find out what to do, sending the letter, sending people (City officials) messages. But it has been a year now and we don't have any feedback.

"I said, 'OK, it’s better to move on', and hopefully I can send some messages to the players wishing them good luck for their games. I will always do that but, with the people at the top, it's quite complicated."

Toure has had a complicated relationship with Guardiola for a long time and hit out at the manager for being unfair towards African players.

Everything started at Barcelona, as Pep replaced the African midfielder, a regular starter at that time, with academy graduate Sergio Busquets. Yaya ended up leaving Barca in 2010.

The two met again at Manchester City in 2016, where the Ivorian also lost his place in the starting XI after Guardiola's arrival and left the team two years later.

'He must be like Maldini or Totti': Yaya Toure urges Messi to end career at Barca

"I hope Messi stays at Barca, he's a special player. I don't see him outside of Barcelona, Laporta has to do everything, he has to understand that Messi must continue, he must be like Maldini or Totti, players from a single club," Yaya Toure was quoted as saying by Cadena Ser.

Yaya Toure spent 3 seasons with Leo Messi at Barcelona before leaving for Manchester City in 2010.

The Ivorian midfielder was impressive during his time at Camp Nou and was instrumental in Barca's 2009 Champions League triumph.

The 38-year-old has quit his playing career and is now working at becoming a football coach.
