'We played for Christian and the whole country': Braithwaite optimistic on Euro last-16 qualification despite Belgium loss

Christian Eriksen wrote in the Whatsapp group after the game, he said we had been fantastic, I read the text on my way to the dressing room,” Martin Braithwaite told the post-Belgium press conference, as quoted by The News 24.

Denmark lost to Roberto Martinez's men 2-1 on Thursday despite being 1-0 up at half-time.

The was the Danes' second defeat in two Euro 2020 matches so far as they were defeated by Finland 1-0 over the weekend. That loss to their fellow Scandinavians was mainly caused by Christian Eriksen's horror incident.

The Inter Milan midfielder collapsed on the pitch midway through the game after suffering a cardiac arrest. Despite being clinically dead for some time, doctors managed to bring Eriksen back to life.

“We had a great start, we proved to be mentally strong. We played for Christian and the whole country. We felt the whole stadium around us, it was amazing,” the Barcelona striker continued.

“We would have won the first game, I am sure about that. But we were forced to play after what had happened. It’s incredible we still have zero points, but I have the feeling we will qualify.”

Denmark now have to defeat Russia in the matchday 3 to keep their last-16 round qualification hopes alive.

'Many were not in a condition to play': Braithwaite on resuming Finland match after Eriksen collapse

In a recent press conference, Martin Braithwaite commented on Denmark's team having to continue the match against Finland at the 2020 Euros after Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch.

"We had two choices, to go out and play the match immediately or play the next day at noon - none were good. We took the lesser of two evils to finish the match. Many of the players were not in a condition to play this match," the Barcelona forward said.

"We were all about to lose a friend and teammate. It's not something you normally think of on a football pitch. No one can prepare for what happened."

After Eriksen had been transported to the hospital, Denmark and Finland eventually returned to the pitch to resume the game. Unfortunately for the Danes, they lost the match 1-0.
