OFFICIAL: Dembele surgery done, Barca reveal recovery time

Barcelona have officially announced that Ousmane Dembele's surgery has gone well. The Catalans say that the winger is expected to spend about four months on the sidelines as a result.

Dembele has been operated on the tendon in his right knee in Turku, Finland, by Dr Lasse Lempainen under the supervision of Barca's medical staff.

Ousmane picked up the injury during France's Euro 2020 match against Hungary. He was subbed on in the second half but had to be subbed back 30 minutes later because of the injury.

In the 2020/21 season, Dembouz played 44 matches for Barca and recorded 11 goals and five assists.

We haven't received any fresh updates about Ousmane Dembele since the Frenchman is set to undergo knee surgery on Monday, June 28.

However, here's a TikTok vid showing him limping in the streets of London and chilling with British rapper Santan Dave.

Presumably, this took place on Saturday, June 26, when the player was already out of France's squad.

Even though it's unknown whether he was actually hanging out with these people, Cules clearly don't like the lad's attitude.

2 PROs and 2 CONs to offering Dembele extension deal amid fresh injury

Ousmane Dembele's contract at Barcelona expires in 2022, and the Catalans' plan was to offer him a new deal. However, with the 24-year-old picking up yet another long-term injury, the club should perhaps reconsider their decision. Here are Tribuna.com's points in favour and against renewing Dembouz's contract.

PROs

1. Useful utility player

During the 2020/21 season, Ousmane proved that he can be very useful in matches against opponents that use a high defensive line, playing a key role in the 2-0 away win against Sevilla, for example. If used correctly, i.e if given the chance to take advantage of his speed and dribbling, the Frenchman can be a very valuable asset that almost any coach would like to have in his squad. Besides, Ronald Koeman has said that he counts on the player for next season.

2. Chance to sell him in the future

If Barca extend Dembele's contract for at least one more season, they can try to sell him in January or next summer, which is definitely better than losing him for free. Sure, Blaugrana will most likely never be able to get back the €145m they paid back in 2017, but there might still be a market for the Frenchman.

If they don't tie the player to a new deal, the 24-year-old will be able to negotiate with a new club starting with January 2022.

CONs

1. Unlikely to become key player

Along with his strong points, Ous has also got his limitations. He is inconsistent and tends to disappear during games, his finishing is far from perfect, and he has definitely got a problem with injuries. All this makes him an unlikely candidate to become the new leader at Camp Nou once Leo Messi leaves or retires, so Barca might be better off parting ways with Dembele and investing in a new forward or putting their trust in the very-promising Ansu Fati.

2. Inflated salary

With a reported salary of almost €13m, the winger earns more than the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and even Gerard Pique. Barca are in a tough financial situation and they will reportedly look to lower Dembele's salary. However, it seems unlikely that the Frenchman would accept too big of a pay cut since he doesn't have the motivation of being an academy graduate the likes of Pique and Messi do.

Thus, instead of bringing his wages a tad below their current level, it might make more sense to wait another year and just get rid of them completely.
