'We've made history': How Koeman's assistant coach beat Bayern as manager in 2019

Ronald Koeman doesn't know what it's like to beat Bayern Munich – neither as a manager nor as a player.

His assistant coach Alfred Schreuder is luckier in this regard. Back in 2019, when the future Champions League winners were managed by Niko Kovac, the Hoffenheim boss got the best of Bayern with a historic 2-1 win away from home.

"I'm obviously very proud of our performance. Our team made history. Hoffenheim have never won a match in Munich before. We tried to press Bayern very high up the pitch but that didn't work. Bayern have huge quality," Schreuder said after the game, as per Bulinews.

"The lads showed where we're trying to get to. We saw a lot of heart from the lads. You always have to try to win the game. They showed that desire today too. I'm very happy to be the coach of this team."

Hoffenheim scored both goals largely thanks to Corentin Tolisso's and Jerome Boateng's individual mistakes – both players won't be on the pitch tonight.

Anyway, it's worth a mention that Schreuder's side attempted more shots on target (5) than Bayern (4) that day – most of the Bavarians' 20 shots went off the target.

Hoffenheim lined up with a 4-1-4-1 formation that day. Interestingly, Philippe Coutinho was in the squad for Bayern.
