Barcelona will extend Sergi Roberto's contract in the coming week, as per multiple top sources in Spain (h/t Cadena SER, Marca, Mundo Deportivo).
Mundo Deportivo claims Roberto's contract extension is guaranteed, with the player accepting a pay cut to remain at Camp Nou.
Xavi also pushed for Barca to keep the 30-year-old despite the fact that Roberto never played under Xavi since he became Barca coach.
Xavi could use the Spaniard in 3 key areas.
1. Defensive midfield
Sergi could be a backup option for Sergio Busquets in that defensive midfield position, particularly if Barca fails to sign another midfielder bar Franck Kessie.
2. Right-back
Barcelona have an ageing (or say ageless) Dani Alves and Sergino Dest as their right-back options. If Cesar Azpilicueta doesn't arrive, Roberto could be used as further reinforcement in that position.
3. Central midfield
Barcelona could see Riqui Puig leave the club this summer. Frenkie de Jong could also be sold for economic reasons. In that case, Roberto could also be used in central midfield.
