As per the latest reports, Barcelona could land Bernardo Silva this summer without offloading Frenkie de Jong. However, the Dutchman would have to lower his wages first.
In case that does happen, there are several ways Xavi could use the two midfielders at the same time. Here are some of the options.
Option 1
Barcelona XI: Ter Stegen - Dest, Kounde, Araujo, Alba - Busquets, De Jong, Bernardo - Raphinha/Dembele, Lewandowski, Ansu Fati.
This option would have Bernardo and De Jong playing as the two central midfielders. Theoretically, the Portuguese would be responsible for creating chances while Frenkie would be more focused on keeping possession and advancing the ball.
Of course, this lineup is not ideal since it has Pedri on the bench.
Option 2
Barcelona XI: Ter Stegen - Dest, Kounde, Araujo, Alba - De Jong, Bernardo, Pedri - Raphinha/Dembele, Lewandowski, Ansu Fati.
This lineup has De Jong playing as the lone pivot. The 25-year-old is not too great for this role because of his playing style, so he would at the very least need some time to adapt.
This would be a more attacking option since Frenkie likes moving forward with the ball much more than Sergio.
Option 3
Barcelona XI: Ter Stegen - Kounde, Araujo, Christensen - De Jong, Busquets, Bernardo, Pedri - Raphinha/Dembele, Lewandowski, Ansu Fati.
This is the formation Xavi used during his time at Al-Sadd.
The formation would be ideal for De Jong since he thrives in double-pivot systems. The question is whether Busquets would manage to adapt, with him failing to impress during the few games Ronald Koeman used him in a similar role.
