Latest reports claim that Mateu Alemany has already spoken to the player's agent over a possible transfer next year.
Red flags
There are a number of reasons why signing Jorginho simply doesn't make sense for Barcelona right now. Let's list them:
🚩He's over 30 - that means Barca may only get a few good seasons from him if any. It also means no resale value.
🚩Even Chelsea fans don’t rate him much - although he’s won the Champions League and finished third for Ballon d’Or, he’s still a polarising player among the Blues’ fanbase.
For all Jorginho’s won for them, you’d think Chelsea fans would want him to continue.
🚩Barca can do better - Instead of Jorginho, Barca can bank on Frenkie De Jong or give Nico Gonzalez a chance to blossom.
🚩Jorginho doesn't score - Okay, that's relative. He's actually scored 29 goals for Chelsea - all penalties except 2.
Why Barca don't seem to care
Barcelona will sign Jorginho all day long if they can for the following reasons:
🥰He’s similar to Busquets - Barca are probably resigned to watching Busquets leave for the US next summer. One player who mirrors Busi is Jorginho. He's almost a carbon copy but four years younger.
Both rank similarly on key passing and defending stats on FBref’s model. The closer a player is to 99, the better he is at a given stat than others in his position.
💰He's affordable - Barcelona are probably wary of spending big to replace Busquets. They'll rather sign a Jorginho who can come in for free.
🎯He's a pass master - The Italian midfielder is arguably among the best passers of the ball in Europe. Stats show he easily records 90% pass accuracy per game putting him among the top 7% of midfielders in Europe in that department.
Barca are a team that like to pass teams to death, perhaps that's why Jorginho has been handpicked.
