How is Jean-Clair Todibo doing? Not so poorly for someone Barca got rid of easily — explained
Barcelona signed Jean-Clair Todibo as a talented 19-year-old centre-back from Toulouse for a mere €1m in January 2020. Despite his talent, he was barely given the chance to prove his worth and, after a series of loans, was sold to OGC Nice for €8.5m. Barca made a profit although the player is now worth more than what Nice paid — here’s why.
Today, Todibo is a big player at Nice who are a midtable team in the French Ligue 1 but with big ambitions. He has started all 30 games he's appeared for them this season, helping them keep 10 clean sheets so far.
Todibo has been impressive enough to make it into the Ligue 1 team of the month by stats website Whoscored.
There's a simple reason Todibo is getting all that attention. His team have avoided defeat in their last six matches and with Todibo's help they've kept five clean sheets in those games.
Todibo is a great example of a dare-devil defender blessed with a superb physique and a football brain. He showcased his best qualities in the recent 3-1 win over second-placed Marseille — have a look at what our former player has turned into:
Fans on Twitter agree Todibo has morphed into a top defender at Nice.
onthervnmvrvt: "Todibo might genuinely be the most underrated CB itw rn"
F3Artem: "Todibo could do so much better than playing for Nice"
Spursscout1: "I Heard Spurs are looking for a dominant CB. Here is one Jean-Clair Todibo, how good has he been this year for Nice? Tall, good understanding of the game, Ball playing defender.
Forca Barca: "Todibo is probably the best player for Nice tho. He's still good but hasn't got that move yet"
AntonioMango4: "Since leaving Barcelona for OGC Nice, Ligue1. Jean-Clair Todibo has been tremendous for OGCN"
Todibo will probably get a call-up to play for France if he carries on in this form. His path to the national team could be shortened if he moves to a bigger club in the summer.
It's surprising that Barcelona did not include a buy-back clause in Todibo's contract when he left. However, the Catalans will receive another €7m in performance-related add-ons and a percentage of any future sale of the player.
