After Marcos Alonso's great outing in El Clasico, Xavi showered the 32-year-old with praise and hinted that he could start against Valencia on Sunday too.
"His performances have been really good. He's adapted very well to the centre-back position," the Barcelona coach said.
"He's winning aerial duels and covers his space well. He is quick for a player of his stature and he helps us in the build-up. I am very happy to have Marcos on the team, he's been a spectacular signing."
With Andreas Christensen suffering a minor blow, Alonso took his place in the starting XI in the match against Real Madrid. The Spaniard delivered a solid defensive performance, winning 7/11 duels, making 10 clearances and 2 tackles.
Barca initially signed Marcos to offer competition to Jordi Alba but the 32-year-old has proven useful at centre-back too.
