Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has sent a message after Russia started a military invasion of Ukraine, tweeting: “Everything that is beautiful in sports is contradictory to what war brings.
“For all people who value freedom and peace, this is a time of solidarity with the victims of military aggression against Ukraine.
“As the Captain of the National Team I will talk with my teammates about the match with Russia in order to work out a common position on this matter and present it to the president of the Polish Football Association as soon as possible.”
Poland are scheduled to face Russia in a FIFA World Cup qualifying play-off game in March, but that has now been put in doubt after all that has transpired in recent days.
Lewandowski seems to be against the prospect of playing the game, but FIFA are yet to make an official statement on what will happen with Russia’s matches for the qualifiers.
