The German assistant referee who was hit by a beer cup in the Bundesliga game between VFL Bochum and Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday has been given a damning diagnosis.
Christian Gittelman was struck by the object when officiating the game from the sidelines and has suffered whiplash and a bruised skull.
The referee claims the incident made him ‘stunned’ and forced him to consult a doctor afterwards.
The game was called off by the referees after this incident and could not be completed on Friday.
Bochum condemned the fan who threw the cup at the referee and are likely to take strict action against them once able to identify the guilty supporter.
