Sean Dyche: 'Everton are not performing like a big club'

Everton escaped relegation on the final day of the season courtesy of a narrow victory against Bournemouth at home.

It wasn't that long ago when Everton was a regular top 6 contender but now, for the second year in a row, they leave it to the eleventh hour to seal their survival in the Premier League.

Sean Dyche was brought in for this task exactly back in January but he wants more from his team.

He said, quoted by The Athletic: "The survival was the main job. We had to get it sorted out and over the line. Now we must refocus on the rest of it. Enjoy it but things have got to change

"The work on the next season started the day I got here. There is massive work to be done. It’s a big club but it’s not currently at the top end of the market. We’re not performing like a big club for two seasons now.

"We lost a very important player (Dominic Calvert-Lewin), a very important centre-forward along the way. Everyone talks about scoring goals — the hardest end of the business. And we’ve found ways of winning games. That’s a good mentality and a good base to build from, but it does need building.

"Let’s have it right. There are no heroes, no heroics for me. That’s a hideous game. No manager wants those games. You have to find some weird, twisted way of enjoying it. It’s a horrible game for all concerned at Everton football club. Of course, it’s fantastic when you come through it and you get the job done."

It remains to be seen if Dyche will remain in charge. He has a contract until June 2025 but there have been rumours he may be replaced by a coach from Brazil.
