This season's UEFA Champions League format will see more matches being played between top teams and underdogs alike. The draw has already been completed with teams knowing who they will will face in September.

Now, a mathematician Piotr Klimek has leveraged several algorithms to predict which teams will make it to the playoff stage.

Remember that teams will be ranked in the knockout playoffs based on how well they perform in the league phase. Thus, there will be intense competition for the top eight spots in the rankings.

Big teams like Manchester City and reigning Champions Real Madrid will fiercely contest those top 8 spots. According to the mathematician, it is Man City who will finish top of the league phase with a 24% gap followed by the defending Champions.

The other teams in the top 8 based on the algorithm will include Bayern, Inter, Atalanta, Arsenal, Dortmund and Barcelona.

The mathematician's algorithm further revealed which teams will complete the remaining 8 playoff spots to make the round of 16. They include Bayer Leverkusen, PSG, Milan, Liverpool, Atletico and Girona.
