The Athletic: Klopp wanted to sign Brandt over Salah in 2017, Michael Edwards convinced him otherwise

Since joining Liverpool in 2017, Mohamed Salah has been the club's best forward having netted 71 Premier League goals in 101 starts and winning two Golden Boots in the process.

However, things could have been much different for the Reds if not for sporting director Michael Edwards.

According to The Athletic, Jurgen Klopp was very keen on signing then-Bayer Leverkusen player Julian Brandt. However, Edwards stepped in and convinced him to sign Salah instead.

Klopp reportedly had doubts over Salah due to his struggles at Chelsea and wasn't very sure of bringing him to Anfield. Edwards convinced Klopp that the then-Roma player would be a hit with the team, urging the German to forget about the forward's poor spell in the Premier League previously.

Klopp listened and Salah's £36 million move to Anfield will go down as one of the best bargain buys in the Premier League era with the forward helping the Reds to Champions League glory and playing a big role in this Premier League-winning campaign.

This story tells the fans that it's not only Klopp who makes the club function so well, but it's also the men behind the scenes who have played a major role in guiding Liverpool to glory.

While Brandt is a good player, he is nowhere close to our Egyptian King - can you imagine Liverpool without Salah the past 3 seasons? We definitely can't!
