Leadership
Back in October 2018, with Liverpool's full-time captain Jordan Henderson and his deputy James Milner not available for a Champions League clash against Red Star, Jurgen Klopp let his players decide who would assume such a responsibility.
The squad voted for Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutch duo have been considered the Reds' third- and fourth-choice skippers ever since. Gini indeed is a key figure at Anfield both on the pitch and in the dressing room.
Versatility
Wijnaldum is one of the most versatile players football has ever seen. The Dutchman has proven numerous times that he's ready to switch from midfield to a wing or even play as a false nine if Klopp wants him to. Incredibly, the 29-year-old has played in every outfield position throughout his career.
Big-time plays
Big-time players make big-time plays - and Gini is a big-time player for sure. The only goal against Manchester City in 2016, the equaliser against Chelsea in 2017, the opener against Tottenham in 2018, the levelling header against Atletico in 2019/20 - the midfielder scores when Liverpool need it most.
And THAT brace against Barcelona deserves a special mention. The Dutchman has scored just 19 goals for Liverpool; however, some of them changed the history of the club.
Balance
The trio of Wijnaldum, Henderson and Fabinho is Klopp's favourite midfield at the moment for a reason - their vigour, hard work, discipline, awareness and endurance let the rest of the team enjoy much more freedom on the pitch.
While Liverpool's brilliant front three and attack-minded full-backs shine, Gini and other midfielders maintain balance, making sure that the defence is not left exposed and that opponents don't have any space for free.
