Referee Lee Mason taken off Liverpool vs Sheff Utd game after Brighton controversy
  • Referee Lee Mason was due to be a fourth official for Liverpool's game against Sheffield United - however, it's been announced that he'll be replaced by John Brooks.
  • According to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), Mason picked up an injury during Saturday's game between West Brom and Brighton.
  • That match, however, will be remembered for another reason: the referee disallowed Brighton's free-kick goal despite blowing the whistle to allow Lewis Dunk to perform it.
  • Moreover, he changed his decision twice in the space of a few minutes, with Dunk slamming it as 'embarrassing and horrendous' after the game.
  • Liverpool could do with a game without a drama over match officials - so it was probably the right call for everyone involved to replace Mason for the Sheffield United game.
