'Who is Gerrard?': Liverpool once tried to convince a North Korean striker by name-dropping but he had no idea who Reds' captain was

In early 2015, a Liverpool delegation led by chief scout Barry Hunter headed to Italy where a meeting was arranged with a promising 16-year-old striker Han Kwang-song.

As he tried to lure the teenager to the Merseyside, Hunter casually name-dropped Steven Gerrard, a player who came through the ranks at Liverpool to become one of the best-known players in the world. But apparently, his name means nothing in North Korea.

'Who is Gerrard?' Han asked, to the bemusement of everyone present at the meeting.

Hunter tried to explain to the youngster who exactly Gerrard was, but the pitch was effectively ruined at this point, and the move never materialised.

Since then, Han tried to make a career in Italy, and he even had 12 Serie A appearances for Cagliari - but last year, he found himself at Qatari side Al-Duhail.

Moreover, due to sanctions imposed on North Korea, Han was banned from playing in Qatar and had to return to his home country in February.

Probably, from this point, we'll hear as much about him as he knew about Gerrard 6 years ago.
