Gini Wijnaldum may no longer be a Liverpool player, but his performance for the Netherlands last night has some fans talking.
The midfielder scored a goal for his team and was immense as they saw off Ukraine with a 3-2 win.
Gini for the Netherlands has always been an advanced midfielder who has scored a lot of goals - his role at Liverpool was vastly different as he had more defensive and ball retention duties.
Liverpool fans were wondering why Jurgen Klopp never fully 'released' Gini:
Twitter user @BabuYagu has explained why Gini's role was so different for us:
"Because he is more valuable to us behind the ball than in front of it from a balance point of view. We want our fullbacks providing all the width and being part of the counter-press.
"From a structural pov, that needs to be balanced out by the midfield protecting the middle of the pitch and the split central defenders protecting the flanks.
"Gini's best season from a numbers pov was his first. It was Liverpool's worst season from a points and results pov. Gini's individual numbers are irrelevant compared to the team's success."
Gini had 22 goals in 237 appearances for Liverpool - he has 23 in 76 games for the Netherlands, tied with Dirk Kuyt.
