Shaqiri set to captain Switzerland with Xhaka missing out against Spain

Xherdan Shaqiri will be given the honour of captaining his country as Switzerland take on Spain in the quarter-finals of the Euros.

The Swiss playmaker will be filling in for Granit Xhaka, who is suspended for the game thanks to picking up multiple bookings.

Speaking at press conference, Shaqiri said, ""I am so proud that I can lead the team in such an important match, but I will prepare as normal, as I do before every match.

"I never change even if I’m wearing the captain’s armband because I am happy and always the same with the captain’s armband and without.

"I’m very proud to lead the team tomorrow in such an important match and I will also try to show my skills and qualities on the pitch tomorrow to help the team."

It is a huge moment for the Liverpool man, with Switzerland reaching the quarter-final stage of a major tournament for the first time since 1954.

Shaqiri will be hoping to add to his 2 goals so that his national team can make it to the semi-finals at the expense of Thiago's Spain.
