'He drove us forward, his attitude is infectious': Adam Lallana details why Henderson's leadership is so important

"When Liverpool were going for the title in 2019-20, he was always driving standards, refusing to countenance any complacency and simply focusing on the next game. That attitude becomes infectious. He drove us forward," Adam Lallana wrote about Jordan Henderson in his column for The Times.

"Having spent so much of my career around Henderson, it is not hard for me to picture how he will have been around the England camp since Tuesday’s win.

"And so while the rest of the country has started to dream [about winning the Euro], Henderson will not have allowed anyone to underestimate Ukraine. He would have been ensuring that performance and preparation remained at the highest level.

"It is a powerful message because it reinforces to everyone that taking your foot off the gas is unacceptable. The team ethic becomes stronger as a result."

Lallana backed England to start Hendo tonight in the Euro quarter-final against Ukraine, adding: "His leadership skills are often mentioned above his football quality. That still frustrates me - the only reason I can think of is that he’s not the same on the eye as other players regardless of being able to do what they can.

"He can also be aggressive in his mannerisms, shouting, coaxing, organising, so maybe that side of his game is highlighted more. He passes the ball quickly and is selfless in his performances; someone who worries more about other people than himself.

"Now he has had 45 minutes against Romania in the friendly match, a half against the Czech Republic, and he came on to see the game out against Germany. If Southgate opts to turn to him, he will not let England down."

The Liverpool skipper is yet to start a game this tournament and according to The Athletic, he won't be starting in the quarters either. However, knowing Hendo, he will be giving it his all and we hope he has a chance to show the world how good he is on the national stage too!
