Van Dijk & more: 5 expensive Liverpool transfers that were totally worth it

Liverpool may not have the richest owners in the world but the Reds are not shy of spending money when they need to.

Having broken the world-record fees for a defender and goalkeeper's transfers during the last few years, Liverpool have spent major money on footballers over our history.

Here, we take a look at a few transfers that were well worth the big bucks spent:

Virgil van Dijk - £76.19m

The Reds spent £76.19m on the centre-back in January 2018 and it was back then a world-record fee for a defender. A lot of people mocked the club for this transfer - none of those doubters can be found now.

Van Dijk has since gone on to become of the best players in the club's history and has been the world's best defender for quite some time now. The PFA Player of the Year, UEFA Men's Footballer of the Year, a 2nd-placed finish in the Ballon d'Or - the £76m seems like a bargain now.

Alisson Becker - £56.25m

Liverpool broke the world-record fee for a goalkeeper's transfer too back in 2018 with a £56.25m (before add-ons) agreement to sign Alisson from Roma. Yet again, the Reds struck gold with this deal.

Alisson was a major force behind the Champions League and Premier League-winning teams and won the UEFA Men's Best Goalkeeper Award in 2019. A leader at the back, the keeper is still only 29 years old and has a lot of good years ahead of him.

When all is said and done, Roma will likely feel very bad about letting the keeper go for that price!

Sadio Mane - £37.08m

Quite a few people (including myself) weren't too convinced with Mane's price tag. He was Liverpool's second-most expensive transfer at the time of his move and while his quality was clear, his inconsistent form at Southampton wasn't too convincing.

5 years later, no one is complaining anymore! Mane has scored over 100 goals for the Reds and won the Golden Boot in the 2018/19 season.

One of Jurgen Klopp's first signings, the winger has been immense for the Reds and will go down as a club legend when all is said and done. Money well spent!

Fabinho - £40.50m

£40.50m is quite a big amount to pay for a defensive midfielder, even if the transfer was made in 2018. Fabinho was not as highly rated as a few of his peers (such as Sergio Busquets or N'Golo Kante). However, his impact here has been unbelievable.

He has now made over 130 appearances for the team and has been arguably the club's best midfielder since his arrival. A key component of our title-winning sides, the Brazilian will go down as a bargain deal for the club.

Kenny Dalglish - £440,000

We go way back in time with this pick! £440,000 might not even buy you an academy player in today's time, but back in 1977, this was then the British record fee for a transfer. Looking back, it's safe to say that Sir Kenny Dalglish was worth it.

King Kenny, as he is fondly called by Reds, is arguably one of the club's two greatest players ever.

His years at Liverpool were among the club's most successful periods, as he won six English league championships, the FA Cup, four League Cups, five FA Charity Shields, three European Cups and one European Super Cup.

With 172 goals in 515 appearances as a player, Dalglish's place in the club's history books is set in stone.
