"[Kostas] Tsimikas has played outstandingly well but [Andrew] Robertson showed today why he’s number one," ex-Man City defender Micah Richards said on the BBC’s Match of the Day.
"Everything in his game was just brilliant, from start to finish he gives so much energy.
"The variance he’s got to his game, he doesn’t just play the simple pass. They couldn’t deal with him.
"This was a performance to say I’m still one of the best defenders in the league. Top performance, from a top player."
Robertson was not quite in his best form in previous weeks, while Tsimikas has emerged as a credible alternative at left-back.
The Scotsman was impressive against Southampton, however, providing an assist in the second minute of the game and being a threat throughout 90 minutes.
