Shrewsbury to report fans to police after offensive Hillsborough chants

Shrewsbury fans were filmed chanting 'F*** the 96' before the FA Cup clash against Liverpool.

The League One have distanced themselves from these fans, confirming they have teamed up with the police to identify them.

"Shrewsbury Town Football Club is disgusted and appalled to see and hear the reports on social media about the vile and offensive chanting and behaviour of a very small minority of our 'supporters' yesterday," the statement published on Shrewsbury's official website reads.

"These people do not represent our Club in any way shape or form and we are liaising with West Mercia Police to try and identify those responsible who will in turn liaise with Merseyside Police.

"If any supporters have any information that might assist us in identifying those responsible, they can contact the Club confidentially and we will use the information as part of our investigations with the Police authorities."

'Ban them for life': Shrewsbury player slams own fans for 'shocking' Hillsborough chants

In a video posted before Sunday's game between Liverpool and Shrewsbury in the FA Cup, a portion of the League One side's fans is seen singing 'F*** the 96'.

It's a chant mocking the Hillsborough victims, unlawfully killed in 1989 (now officially 97).

Shrewsbury goalkeeper Harry Burgoyne was disgusted by his own fans, posting the following tweet after the game.

"As for these Shrewsbury fans! Should be ashamed of yourselves," he tweeted.

"Liverpool showed nothing but respect today. Shocking absolutely shocking! Out them and ban them for life!"

Liverpool defeated Shrewsbury 4-1, advancing to the fourth round, where they'll face Cardiff City.
